Medical tourists can access high quality medical care at competitive prices in Turkey - as well as avoid long waiting times for surgery and other consultations. However, it is vital to clarify the qualifications, training, and accreditation of the doctors and surgeons before committing to treatment and ask to read or talk to some previous patients before making your decision.
After graduating from medical school students must take exams in order to become a Cosmetic Surgeon and qualify for admittance to the Cosmetic Surgery Specialist Program. Residency takes up to six and a half years, after which students are given the title of Certified Plastic Surgeon, MD.
Make sure your Cosmetic Surgeon is a member of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, an organisation which aims to advance Turkish Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery through scientific studies and meetings and provides international educational standards for the next generation of plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
As with Cosmetic Surgery, students must study for five years in a Faculty of Dentistry before they become a Dental Practitioner. Upon graduation they receive their DDS degree and can become a specialist in a particular area of dentistry. In order to practice dentistry each Dentist must be a member of the Turkish Dental Association, which is responsible for monitoring the practice and professional development of dentistry within Turkey. If a dentist wishes to perform cosmetic dentistry then he/she must be a member of Turkish Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry.
The Turkish Ministry of Health regulates the dental colleges and the Turkish dental industry, and the dental education is regulated by Turkey's Council of Higher Education.
To work in Reproductive Medicine doctors should study Obstetrics & Gynecology and have theoretical and practical training in medical and surgical management of infertility, varied assisted reproductive techniques (ART) as well as reproductive endocrinology. After the doctor finishes medical school he/she needs to serve at least six months in a government approved hospital.
Doctors working in the reproductive sector should also hold a Turkish IVF Specialist Certificate and be a member of the European Society of Human Reproductive Endocrinology (ESHRE), a non-profit association whose aim is to promote the interests and understanding of reproductive biology and medicine. An official from either ESHRE or The European Board and College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (EBCOG) issues IVF Medical Centres with a Diploma after assessment. Other official organisations are the Reproductive Endocrinology Association and the Turkish Society of Gynaecology.
The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health regulates all the clinics and hospitals in Turkey, and each must meet the ministry’s standards and requirements. The Turkish Medical Association is the national organisation representing medical practitioners in the public and private sectors.
