The Republic of Turkey’s Ministry of Health is responsible for, and oversees, the country’s health and social welfare issues, and is the central decision maker for all of Turkey’s provinces. The Ministry of Health regulates all the clinics and hospitals in Turkey, and each must meet the ministry’s standards and requirements.
The Ministry also regulates the dental colleges and the Turkish dental industry, though the dental education is regulated by Turkey's Council of Higher Education and The Turkish Medical Association is the national organisation representing medical practitioners in the public and private sectors.
Turkey has a fairly complex health care system consisting of several different plans and departments. The social security system is divided into the SSK (a social insurance and healthcare service for employed people), a government fund for retired civil servants, and a system for self employed or agricultural workers.
Although some might say that Turkish healthcare isn’t as developed as other Western countries, rest assured that its medical profession is highly trained and private hospitals and clinics offer first class medical treatment. In the early nineties Turkey’s government created more than a hundred new private hospitals which are generally located in the main cities, towns and tourist areas, and offer first class in-patient/hotel facilities.
Private health insurance is also well developed in Turkey and many residents choose to pay into private health policies in addition to their state contribution to take advantage of this excellent quality and service.
Doctors and surgeons often begin their training in Turkey then go abroad to study further, for example in the US or other parts of Europe. As a result, doctors and medical teams are usually fluent in English.
