Turkish Airlines (THY) has an extensive domestic route, covering most of the major cities and centres in and around Turkey and there are also some no-frills airlines; Atlas Jet and Onur Air. Alternatively, coach travel in Turkey is excellent and there are services to almost anywhere. Some of the leading coach companies are Varan, Kamil Koc (no web site listed) and Ulusoy. All three companies run regular services from Istanbul’s main bus station.
The Turkish State Railways (TCDD) operates good services around the country, some with very scenic views. There are direct connections into Izmir from Istanbul and Ankara. If you are keen to drive in Turkey then there are plenty of car hire options at airport arrivals but many visitors are put off by the high road accident rate and the fact that Turkey has only a few fast highways (the Trans European Motorway around Istanbul and Ankara and a motorway network around Izmir). Driving is on the right-hand side.
For shorter distances, i.e., getting about the city consider a ‘Dolmus’ – a shared taxi-come-mini-bus which is something of a tradition in Turkey. Dolmus buses are a very popular, cheap and easy way to get about, particularly to areas outside the city centre, but not so good if you’re in a hurry as they only depart once they’re full!
In Turkey you'll find a wide range of accommodation options from luxury high-end hotels to traditional family-run guest houses. In Turkey's larger cities (Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir) you'll find international chain hotels as well as renovated Ottoman mansions or classical buildings which have been renovated into hotels/tourist accommodation and make for a more unique type of stay. In the Aegean and Mediterranean coastal resorts you will find a whole host of hotels, pensions and holiday villages.
The Ministry of Tourism licenses a number of hotels throughout the country, with standards of one to five stars. A comfortable three star guest room/hotel in Turkey will cost between YTL 75 (circa £32 / US$45) and YTL 175 (circa £75/US$106). Bear in mind that many medical tourism agencies will arrange accommodation for you as part of a treatment 'package'.
The country code for Turkey is 90 and the time is GMT + 2. The official language is Turkish but English and German are widely spoken in the main cities and tourist resorts.
