The duration of the stay will vary depending on what treatment you are having, and your medical background, but expect your doctor to ask you to stay for a short while afterwards to perform observations and follow-ups.
Every surgical procedure carries with it risks for complications like bleeding or infection, whether this is being undertaken in your home country or abroad. However, the risk of blood clots may be higher due to travel-associated dehydration after flying long-distance.
Quite often, complications can arise due to miscommunication, i.e., patients omitting to inform the doctor/surgeon of allergies or information about their health history so make sure you inform your doctor/surgeon of anything relevant. Post-operative problems and complications may also occur if patients take post-op care into their own hands so it is really important to follow the instructions of your treating doctors to ensure smooth and speedy recovery.
In the event of a complication occurring within 30 days of discharge, and related to the condition for which you were treated, request that no charge be made for re-admission for the same amount of time as the initial package.
Many hospitals provide experienced representatives to look after patients, helping them deal with the medical team, have tests and treatment, as well supporting them during the recovery process. If you feel you need it, you can also arrange for nursing services at your hotel once you have left the hospital. If you are travelling with a friend/partner the hospital will be able to recommend nearby accommodation for them.
When you are discharged you will be given copies of your medical documents and reports containing the observations, prescriptions etc, which you can give to another doctor while in Turkey, as well as to your GP back home (it is wise to inform your GP before treatment so that your patient records can be kept up to date).
