Health care in Turkey is of a high standard and Turkey is renowned for having some top class medical staff. However, it is essential to check the credentials of the surgeons, dentists and doctors before committing to treatment. Turkish doctors and surgeons have a good reputation and it is quite common for them to have studied and qualified in the UK, Europe or the US so they have gained added experience of living and working abroad in different environments.
Once you have selected a shortlist of surgeons (two to three) check their qualifications and credentials. It is also advisable to have an initial consultation to ask their opinions about the procedure, their fees, and gauge their response to your questions.
Some suggested questions to ask:
-
Do they perform the procedure on a regular basis?
-
Are there any complications associated with the procedure?
-
If complications do occur or the procedure is not successful, how will the surgeon deal with these?
-
What is their success rate of this type of procedure?
-
Do they have international experience and do they belong to international associations? Which one(s)?
-
Where else do they operate?
-
What is the nurse to patient ratio?
-
Have the surgeon and anesthesiologist worked together before? (This is important as they build up a relationship and can better monitor the patient’s needs);
-
What type of anesthetic will be used and are there any risks with this type of anesthesia?
-
Will the anesthesiologist perform a pre-operative evaluation? And a post-operative evaluation?
-
Will the anesthesiologist take into account the patient’s wishes? (Provided it is safe to do so);
-
What aftercare will be provided?
