What is hair loss and why does it occur?

Hair loss is a part of the process of natural hair renewal and is usually seen on the head. Hair loss in different parts of the body is generally unnoticed and has a different genetic program to that of scalp hair.

The effect of genes and hormones on hair loss - it is thought that the real cause of genetic hair loss is the enzyme 5-Alpha Reductase, which converts testosterone into dehydrotestosterone (DHT). Dehydrotestosterone shows its effect by connecting to the androgen receptors of hair follicles. DHT shortens the life cycle of hair follicles. After each cycle, hairs get thinner and thinner and while the process is repeated, the scalp becomes more visible.

Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss seen both in men and women. In this type of hair loss, a gradual thinning is observed on the forehead or crown. The cause for this hair loss is the genetically coded sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT.

Hair transplant treatments available at Transmed in Turkey

Having experience of more than fifteen years in the field of hair transplantation and being an institution where more than 10,000 operations have been performed, the Transmed teamknows that a successful operation does not have clearly set criteria. However, the success of the operation is largely dependent on the experience and expertise of the doctor, the choices of technical equipment and a well-organised team.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) - the most frequently applied and the most advanced technique is transplanting physiological hair groups called follicular units after extracting them from a strip of hair in the hair ring.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) - in this technique hair follicles are extracted directly from the level of follicles on the skin. This technique is less invasive than the FUT method. In FUE, no scalpels or stiches are used in the donor region and thus no visible scars remain. While extraction techniques are different in FUE and FUT, restoration techniques are identical.

Density

On an healthy scalp, there are 70-100 follicular units per square centimeters (FU/cm^2). Depending on the donor area and the recipient site, our surgeons prefer to plan 35-50 grafts per square centimeter.

What does miniaturization mean?

Normally, there are 70-100 follicular units per square centimetres (FU/cm²) in the scalp. According to the results of scientific studies, hair loss becomes noticeable when hair density decreases by 50%. This may also be termed as 'felt density', which is different from mathematical density.

How can I get my hair back? - hair transplantation can be performed for every age group. There are some certain factors needs to be taken into consideration like hair density, scalp elasticity, hair loss type, hair colour, and hair type (curly or straight).

Hair loss in women - usually seen as the thinning of hair, the appearance of the pattern is quite different from men. While hair loss in men starts with losing most of the frontal hairline, women generally keep this part of their hair. Hair loss is a gradual process in women but it can accelerate during pregnancy or menopause.

Hair loss treatments

Lotions that promote blood circulation - it has been scientifically proven that when applied to the balding area in the form of either a topical solution or foam, Minoxidil contributes to hair growth to a great extent.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) - laser given in low doses has been proven to stimulate hair growth. More oxygen is carried to the hair follicles with low-dose laser therapy’s effect of enlarging the blood vessels.

Medication - there are medicines effective for male-pattern hair loss. Tablets including finasterid prevent testosterone from converting to DHT.

PRP and other treatments - either applied with the mesotherapy technique or with a dermaroller, PRP and vitamin combinations can help retain your hair.
